Fire Outbreak In "GHANASS" Forces School To Close Down

Government is putting measures in place to build a new three-storey dormitory for Ghana Senior High School[GHANASS] in Koforidua, Eastern Region. These measures are put in place to indemnify the school for their great loss in the fire outbreak on Thursday.

According to Eastern Regional Minister, Mavis Ama Frempong, President John Mahama has given her the mandate to do all technical assessment of the disaster and provide a report in order for government to build a new dormitory for the school. She said;

" President John Mahama told me to do all technical assessment of the disaster and he is going to put up a new two or three girls dormitory depending on the assessment report. "

She presented to the school some relief items such as bags of rice, sugar, sanitary pads, beverages etc.


Luckily, the calamity happened during prep hours and none is reported to be dead. The girls dormitory was destroyed completely by fire on Thursday evening.

Reports from GHANASS suggests almost all belongings of the girls were consumed by the fire. The girls dormitory is able to accommodate over 600 female students and you can imagine how badly the calamity has affected academic work and affairs of the school.

The report also suggests that teaching and learning are on hold and school authorities as part of the short term measures to tackle the situation has closed the school temporarily for Form one[1] and two[2] students.



Headmaster, Rev. Abraham Donkor announced closure of the school yesterday. He said the school will put in place short to long term measures to address the accommodation challenge now facing the school.

The Chief Fire Officer has called on all institutions nationwide to implement fire safety audit report to ward off the uncontrollable outbreak of fire in the country.
